We have lots of exciting events, projects and workshops coming up at Void over the next couple of months
Our exhibition Beating a Retreat with Cevdet Erek has just opened, and soon we will be sharing a pre-recorded In Conversation between Void’s Director Mary Cremin and Cevdet Erek. Alongside this, our family programme continues onsite and online – more details below – and we are delighted to be hosting events as part of Culture Night and University of Atypical’s Bounce Festival. Our Youth Programme, Void Visionaries, will also continue with a series of graffiti workshops with Peaball as part of Good Relations week.
See below for more information about the events that will accompany Beating a Retreat, and stay tuned to our social media channels to hear about more upcoming events. If you have a group that you would like to bring to the gallery, please do email Maeve Butler on email@example.com and we would be happy to organise a tour for you.
Culture Night at Void | Family Workshop
6 – 8pm, 17 September
Join us for a family workshop led by Zoe McSparron, which uses drawing as a medium to explore Cevdet Erek’s exhibition Beating a Retreat – a site specific sound art installation.
The gallery floor becomes a sketchpad while we conduct experiments in translating sound to drawing using a variety of drawing and movement exercises and tools including charcoal, crayons and markers. The workshop will encourage us to listen closely to the sounds that we hear and create our own visions from it.
This is a drop in session but please note that numbers in the gallery will be restricted so you may be required to come back at another point during the session if the gallery is full.

Lunchtime Director’s Tour of Beating a Retreat, Cevdet Erek
1pm on 29 September
Void’s Director Mary Cremin will be leading a Director’s Tour of our current exhibition Beating a Retreat with artist Cevdet Erek. Join her to hear more about Cevdet’s work and the process of curating the exhibition remotely.
Cevdet Erek is an Istanbul based artist and musician. A background in architecture, sound engineering, and performing in a band forms the basis of his practice. In his working process Erek often responds to the architectural context through interventions, using sound to inhabit the space.
The exhibition was disrupted by COVID 19 and due to travel restrictions, has been developed remotely. Erek has developed Beating a Retreat through the lens of conversations, processes of experimentation and virtual tools. The conditions of production from a distance create a direct connection and correlation with some of the artist’s previous works; Room of Rhythms – Long Distance Relationship, Sydney Biennial, 2016 and A Long Distance Relation, MUAC, Mexico City, 2017.
