Memory Sessions: The Orchard Gallery

Thursday 28 May 2026, 6-8pm at Void Art Centre

Join PhD Researcher Ashab Ahmad for a Memory Session on the Orchard Gallery (1978 to 2003), Derry’s first contemporary visual arts space. The event will take place at Void Art Centre on Thursday 28 May 2026, 6-8pm.

This is an opportunity to share your experiences of the gallery over some warm refreshments, as well as to discuss the gallery’s programme and its legacy. Everyone is welcome regardless of whether they remember the Orchard Gallery or simply wish to learn more about its history. Ashab will display photographs, documents, publications, and articles on the Orchard Gallery that have been retrieved from archival material at the Void Art Centre. Participants are encouraged to bring in any items in their own possession that they feel would be relevant to the discussion. Whether you fancy a casual chat with other participants or a more critical consideration of lessons for the current context, this event seeks to stimulate new conversations about the Orchard Gallery within the city.

Ooze in and Ooze out in Derry: A natural dye workshop

Presenting a natural dye workshop at Void Art Centre, hosted by our June artist in residence Yujin Lee. The workshop takes place on Saturday 1 June 2024, from 2-4pm at Void.

Native to East Asia, P. montana (a.k.a Kudzu) has a long history with humans. This medicinal plant is not only edible, but a great source of fiber to make clothes, ropes or paper as well. In Jeju, Kudzu has also been used to dye fabric. In recent years, with climate change and non-stop deforestation, Kudzu has flourished to the point of it being labeled as “invasive.” The Jeju government even declared a war to extinguish them. It is quite ironic, as Kudzu powder or tea is still very popular to Koreans as health supplements.

During the natural dye workshop, Ooze In Ooze Out in Derry, Yujin will elaborate on the biological, historical, mythical, and word-of-mouth stories around this fascinating plant that is ‘taking over’ Yujin’s island.

Ulster Graduate Award – Zara Lyness Residency

Thursday 25 April – Thursday 9 May 2024 | Void Engage Space

We are looking forward to welcoming Zara to the Engage space at Void Art Centre, where her new artwork exploring ideas around children’s games, art history and jigsaws will be available to interact with and enjoy between 25 April and 09 May. Contact mhairi@derryvoid.com for further details.

From Zara’s statement:

‘I am a female Irish artist based in Co. Down. I have an integrated approach to my practice, combining sculptural, ceramic, mark making and live performance processes in my work. My attention alternates between themes of relationships, marginalisation, and permissions, applying perceptions of memory and experience through a semi-autobiographical and gendered lens.’
